Our Story

Ranch Legacy was founded to serve farm and ranch families who want to protect their land, their livelihood, and their legacy for generations to come. Every working operation carries more than economic value, it holds family history, cultural identity, and years of stewardship. Yet without thoughtful succession and estate planning, even the strongest operations can face unnecessary risk during times of transition.

We work with agricultural families across the United States to create clear, legally sound plans for ownership transfer, management transitions, and long-term land protection. Our approach bridges practical ranch knowledge with experienced legal guidance, helping families navigate complex decisions with confidence and clarity.

Ranch Legacy exists to support smooth transitions, reduce conflict, and keep working lands working. Through individualized advisory services, educational workshops, and practical planning tools, we help families build succession plans that reflect their values, protect their assets, and sustain their operations for the next generation.

Meet the Founder -
Caitlyn “Cat” Kelly, JD

Cat Kelly is the founder and attorney behind Ranch Legacy, bringing together legal expertise and hands-on ranching experience. Raised around agriculture and working lands, Cat understands firsthand the realities ranch families face, from balancing business viability to preserving family relationships and honoring tradition.

After earning her law degree from a top-tier law school, Cat built a career focused on land use, conservation, and agricultural systems. She has worked alongside ranching families, Native nations, and conservation organizations on issues ranging from grazing stewardship to long-term land protection. Today, she continues to live and work on a large cattle ranch in Montana, staying grounded in the day-to-day realities of agricultural operations.

As an attorney devoted to the land and the law, Cat helps farm and ranch families navigate ownership transitions, governance decisions, and legal structures with a practical, straightforward approach. Her work centers on protecting working lands, supporting family-run operations, and ensuring that succession plans are not only legally sound, but realistic, durable, and tailored to each operation.
